Chungy
There's qemu.
Eris
dont question his... stupidity, or him being naive as hell.
Kirn
Why not just keep using x86? There is no critical flaw in x86 design, only some implementations. And implementation is not design.
Chungy
*nods*
Chungy
granted that qemu usermode only works for Linux as of now, it won't be impossible to port to ReactOS I'm sure
Kirn
Lets go back to 68k processors! THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH THAAAAAAAT
if only there were more modern implementations, that wouldn't be too bad of an idea.
Kirn
or SPARC's craziness with a few hundred CPU registers and even a sliding register window!
Kirn
(talk about the potential for hyper-efficient procedure calls!)
Kirn
Of course, I know you're trying to argue some bullshit point about Spectre/Meltdown w.r.t. x86, but that's not an inherent flaw of the x86 ISA, only specific x86 implementations. There are x86 implementations (CPUs from AMD and VIA, for example) that do not have these flaws. Therefore, the argument that x86 should be dumped because of these flaws is myopic and logically flawed.
Kirn
Also, Spectre is exploitable on other ISAs, like ARM.
Chungy
Generally agree. My own watching over projects like RISC-V has been one motivated by wanting ISAs in general to cease being proprietary in some form or another. x86 and ARM are included in that category :p
Chungy
meltdown and spectre have been overblown
Eris
also why dump something thats still widely used?
Eris
whoops, spectre and meltdown are some serious shit, BETTER MOVE TO SOMETHING THAT DOESNT CONTAIN THESE FLAWS, IM SURE THE PROGRAMS WILL RUN FINE
Chungy
could move to AMD and still have compat
⚶ VΛNILLΛ
Why did we dump Motorola 68000 processors?
Chungy
They weren't able to keep up with new up-and-coming CPUs (x86) on significant performance bechmarks
Kirn
Why did we dump Motorola 68000 processors?
Motorola wasn't willing to commit sufficient engineering resources to further the ISA, instead looking to push 88k instead.
Chungy
the nail in the coffin was when Doom was impractical to play on a 68k chip
Chungy
Eventually when Doom was made open source, people have made ports that run full-speed on some of the higher-end 68ks in AmigaOS
Chungy
but that came very late and required some assembly wizardry :P
Kirn
That bet bit them on the ass, so they played the field with the "AIM Alliance" (Apple, IBM, Motorola), to become a second source supplier for IBM PowerPC chips (and Apple exclusively used Motorola-fabbed PowerPC CPUs for quite a while.)
Eris
could move to AMD and still have compat
does amd include in some other processor types x86 emu or..? kinda suggests that, based on the discussion before and my silly sarcastic comment
Chungy
*blinks*
Chungy
AMD's main business is making x86 chips and they're not vulnerable.
Chungy
the x86 design is patent- and royalty-encumbered and possibly not legal to produce your own without licensing from Intel and AMD (for both the 16/32-bit ISA and the 64-bit ISA). There are people that have made open clones of the 80286 that has had all its patents expire, but you won't ever find something approaching a modern x86 chip.
Chungy
That's why we have alternatiaves like RISC-V instead
Chungy
as far as using qemu to provide x86 compatibility, it at least probably would work fine enough to play games (that are more GPU-bound than anything). Maybe not for some workloads though :P
Chungy
already does
Chungy
Linux and FreeBSD have ports, GCC and binutils have support

Gordon, why are you trying so hard to type something, you won't be able to, you're mute
Eris
This @oh0oh guy keeps mentioning me and then removes them. Are you afraid of being judged by me through my sarcastic but yet truthful words? Because, even if you don't mention me, I'll still do it, simply because you just won't realize how much of a naive person you are, throwing so much praise to ReactOS it fucking hurts to read and watch, and having demands that aren't even possible at it's current state, also you seem to talk lots of bullshit, pretending you know what you're saying, but in the end, you don't.
Vitaliy ◀️TriΔng3l▶️
there's a difference between speaking and typing.
The real Gordon has a very unusual way of typing
