Yes, it is (source: i am from veneto, a region of Italy, so i am a native italian speaker). Btw: English is easy to learn, has a simple grammar and does not require an huge vocabulary to be understood. Latin languages are usually harder to learn. Also, i find the idea of an universal language really sad. I like the differences between languages and their cultural origins. Biodiversity is richness in languages, too :)

Btw, Galileo galilei was not italian at all, the same for marco polo, Cristoforo colombo and many others, simply because Italy did not exist at the time. It was a bunch of small states. Then Napoleon did a disaster by imposing his power on many of these states, resulting in a series of forced unions and divisions which continued until 1918. This is still causing a lot of troubles
