and reactos now
Kirn
Been using Linux for close to 14 years. And in that time, I have come to see the deficiencies in the design. And hell, some of the userland stuff, they're trying to fix it with snaps, fuck stabilising core library ABIs, let's just make app store style containers.
Kirn
Windows and OS X do not need to do this crap, their core libraries have stable APIs and ABIs. Programs (assuming they aren't exploiting undocumented behaviour) will continue to work into the far future without any maintenance (or even recompilation.)
Kirn
Even if nothing changes in a Linux program, you still have to recompile the damned thing every so often to avoid ABI changes breaking binaries.
Kirn
If you want Linux to be a viable end-user OS, you're gonna have to realise the customer doesn't give two shits about the open source/free software ideologies, and merely wants the software they have to work, and work for a long time.
Kirn
ReactOS has this going for it by duplicating long-stable APIs and ABIs.
Kirn
It's far easier to get old Windows software running on Linux, than it is to get old Linux software running on Linux. (And for the sake of simplicity, let's assume commercial software, since that's all the average user really cares much for.)
Kirn
Snaps is an interesting approach, but it's going to lead to bloat as you're bringing around dozens of copies of the same library.
Kirn
(part of the problem on Android as well, no proper support for user installable shared libraries means each and every application brings it's own copy of the needed libraries.)
Mike
Then use some other OSes formatting tool. Just because Windows won't format anything larger than 32GB to FAT32 means nothing about the capabilities of FAT32 (which I think caps out at 256GB)
Fat32 iirc caps at 2 terabytes, although most utilities, systems and programs will stop long before that limit. Many old BIOS stop at 137 gb
Mike
The problem is that with partitions larger than 32 GB fat32 allows only 32 KB clusters, which means a lot of wasted space for each file. I don't know about exfat or similar.

Old Windows programs is a nightmare too tbh
That's generally only games, that do things outside of documented APIs/behaviours for performance.
Quinten
Still, in general for old programs Wine seems to beat Windows

Dudes where is option to use ext4? NTFS? FAT? NOOOOO
Are you drunk or something? Clearly you don't know that "Rectos" is still in early Alpha Stages, there's a reason why there are no other Filesystems to select, mainly because the goal is to stabilize "Rectos" and make sure that WinXP programs (or later) work flawlessly on it, and improve NTVDM beyond Microsoft's crap.

No matter how much we call windows crap it's actually quite a good piece of software

And more secure than Linux in some ways.
Kirn
No matter how much we call windows crap it's actually quite a good piece of software
It could still improve, but NTVDM mentioned above is quite crap. It's the DOS/16-bit Windows compatibility subsystem on 32-bit releases of Windows.
Kirn
It depends on Virtual 8086 mode on real Windows, which is why it's not available on 64-bit. Wine somehow runs 16-bit applications without use of Virtual 8086 mode, and on 64-bit, so clearly it's possible to improve that subsystem in some manner.
Kirn
On Itanium versions of Windows, NTVDM also handles 32-bit x86 programs as part of WoW64. Sure, Itanium processors can "natively" run x86 code, but the software CPU emulator Microsoft uses is faster than the native hardware support.

I mark it as a duplicate of CORE-8525 (https://jira.reactos.org/browse/CORE-8525), blocked by the font engine rewrite.
