I love meshuggah, I bought every cd of theirs
./pascal.sh
I just found bacula. It looks very promising and it has freeBSD support https://www.bacula.org/documentation/screenshots/
ok it seems that the fork Bareos is even better bareos.org Has someone tried bareos yet?

yes i already found that tutorial, thx 😂😂😂👍
./pascal.sh
Tor relay, i2p node, monero/wownero public node
Mhhhh i am not sure if i need these services on a Homeserver 😂
kub-kun
Hi
Jay
Mhhhh i am not sure if i need these services on a Homeserver 😂
Try bastillebsd.org to create docker-like jails
Jay
Play with minio, redis, nextcloud
./pascal.sh
Try bastillebsd.org to create docker-like jails
OK what can I do with it compared to standard freebsd? And this server will hold important data and backups So its my production server
Jay
Its just an application running in freebsd
Jay
https://bastillebsd.org/
./pascal.sh
Mh OK but what are the benefits compared to standard freebsd?
Jay
It IS standard FreeBSD
Jay
pkg install bastille
./pascal.sh
Oh OK so its just an application for containerization .... Like docker?
Jay
Yes
cp
it is a bunch of shell scripts
cp
there is a telegram channel for it
cp
@BastilleBSD
./pascal.sh
Mh I looked up the templates available yesterday I think I'm only going to use openssh and plexmediaserver of them I'm not sure if I need a container for that
./pascal.sh
I just wondered if it is possible to throw in another HDD in raid / zpool afterwards I will have a single 4 TB HDD in my server but if my storage is full I will throw in another one in raid I think How easy is it in BSD with zfs to extend from one drive to two drives raid ? Can it be done while leaving the data untouched or would I have to backup the server ?
./pascal.sh
You don't need it. You asked for something to play with
Uhm no i wanted to play with bhyve virtual machines I asked for useful stuff I could do with my server 😂
./pascal.sh
I'm currently planning to setup : - NFS server (preferably with authentication / kerberos if possible without LDAP) for file sharing - Plex media server for in-home streaming - bareos as a backup server
./pascal.sh
Mh maybe I could also move my home assistant instance from my raspberry pi to the freebsd server

Apple just took Darwin, which is BSD based and called it their own as OSX :( Also osx is far from BSD nowadays
dapit
Will they announce Arm proc for macbooks
dapit
Bye bye hackintosh
./pascal.sh
Who needs osx anyway
kub-kun
i think
Arminio

You'd be surprised how many FreeBSD developers use Macbook's.
g
how well do macbooks support freebsd?
g
modern ones
./pascal.sh
You'd be surprised how many FreeBSD developers use Macbook's.
Mh because they are well build? I don't know Problem is the efi / hardware Trojans / etc I am using a thinkpad and I'm happy I know that macs are nice because of silence, battery, build quality
./pascal.sh
One thing which really bothers me about the new Mac book pro is the too large trackpad. Yes I mean a large trackpad is nice but that is really toooo big The other thing is the keyboard. It has almost zero travel and feedback Typing on that keyboard is just not comfortable And yes I know that design / looks is a very subjective topic but I personally don't like the design of the Mac book pro or macs in general I more like the design of IBM / lenovo thinkpads But that's just my two cents
Arminio

Hm, I don't know, I never had much problems with EFI so far. They're well built, yes. I usually take a Macbook over anything else if a company I work for asks me what they should get me. I love those machines. For personal use I'd probably just build a workstation and use Linux/BSD on it, and buy some outdated oldschool laptop to carry around in a backpack that I can afford to lose.

I hate efi The problem with efi is that you have a full network stack And it runs all the time and has full control over your hardware So you are running a proprietary piece of software on your PC and you have no idea what it does and it even has network access Possibly there are also exploits and RCEs
Arminio
And yeah, possibly there are exploits and whatnot.
Arminio
Apropos network stack: FreeBSD really has to keep on with IPv6.
./pascal.sh
Apropos network stack: FreeBSD really has to keep on with IPv6.
OK I'm not sure I don't use ipv6 I just use dhcpv6 on opnsense for wan and it works without any problem
Arminio
I'd even go as far as to say that I 'd prefer Linux for anything network related these days.
./pascal.sh
Well FreeBSD network stack is insanely broken at some points.
Really ? I always thought freebsd's network stack would be very strong and better that on linux
Arminio
Absolutely not true anymore, no.
./pascal.sh
What happened?
Arminio
Nothing happened. People were lazy.
./pascal.sh
Mh
./pascal.sh
Why am I using opnsense (freebsd) on my firewall? 😂😂😂😟
Arminio
The whole IPv6 stack is a serious mess
Arminio
Well it works quite well, sure, but it has pretty deep going problems you won't have with a modern Linux kernel
./pascal.sh
Mhh OK
Arminio
Policy routing, for example.
Arminio
It's a huge mess to get something identical on FreeBSD.

Apache OpenOffice needs your help The Apache® OpenOffice® Project is on the road to a bigger update for the leading open source office suite. This is your chance. OpenOffice needs people to help in the development process. Don't panic, you do not need to be a software engineer or programmer though those skills are always welcome. You can already contribute a lot if you just install the software and test it for quality, reliability, language translations and submit bug reports, write documentation, and many other tasks as well. If this sounds like something that you would be interested in then join with many others from all over the world on our development mailing list by sending an e-mail to dev-subscribe@openoffice.apache.org and join the fun (more information about mailing lists).
./pascal.sh
Would you rather recommend me to run Linux than freebsd on my new homeserver?
./pascal.sh
I thought I would give freebsd a try as a server OS
Arminio
Would you rather recommend me to run Linux than freebsd on my new homeserver?
Depends. ZFS support on FreeBSD is super awesome I think, and for a home-server there's not much need for network stuff. But if you for example were to build a home VPN router that routes all your outgoing traffic through a VPN tunnel, have fun doing that with FreeBSD. It works, but it's super wonky. This is a 3-liner in Linux.
Arminio
iptables is also said to be MUCH more understandable than pf.
Arminio
And then, last but not least, there's kernel-space support for Wireguard in Linux 5.6
./pascal.sh
Yea zfs is very nice that's a strong point for freebsd
./pascal.sh
Sure, we're crying on a very high level here. :)
Yea 😂 I mean untangle is also nice but mh Personally I prefer opnsense
./pascal.sh
And i don't use a VPN so ...
Arminio
I run FreeBSD on several servers still because it's so super heavily understandable. I have the feeling that there are MUCH less layers of indirection and stupid complexity without any benefits when I use BSDs.
./pascal.sh

Yes I know what you mean That's one big difference to Linux BSD just feels more transparent There is still everything managed through plain configs and no wonky systemd shit
Arminio
I can be 100% sure I'm able to track down a specific problem when I install FreeBSD on my computer. That's unique to FreeBSD. No other operating system gets me that feel.
Arminio
How is the network and disk performance?
Hm, works for me I guess? I never had much problems with FreeBSD, even been running it on desktops since 2002.
Arminio
Sometimes Linux was noticeably faster, sometimes FreeBSD won that fight, there were times for both I think?
./pascal.sh
Hm, works for me I guess? I never had much problems with FreeBSD, even been running it on desktops since 2002.
Well if I can utilize my Xeon, 32gigs of ram and get gigabit speeds I'm fine haha
