Greetings y'all. Long time multiple OS user here since the early 80s. Mostly run Linux these days - Solus and PCLinuxOS. Have been testing out FreeBSD 13.0 on a laptop, and enjoying the OS so much that I ordered "Absolute FreeBSD, 3rd Edition: The Complete Guide to FreeBSD" by Michael W. Lucas.

Welcome
Thanks!

1 freebsd 2 just follow installation encryption option 3 zfs 4 chroot/jail maybe
Badugar
For FS you can either use UFS or ZFS
Anonymous
1. FreeBSD and use the desktop-installer script (https://wiki.freebsd.org/unitrunker/desktop-installer). 2. GELI on ZFS. Provided you select ZFS during installation, the options will be available. 3. For desktop, I'd recommend ZFS, as it's more resilient in the event of power failure or bad system shutdown. 4. There are hardening options as part of the install. I generally just tick all the options. Then, follow best practices as far as services you enable and such.
Anonymous
ali masoomi Having used both, I've found GELI to be somewhat comparable to LUKS. I did find I had more control post install to modify GELI (such as the passphrase).
Anonymous
ali masoomi I refer to the OpenBSD (works fine under FreeBSD) section here to harden SSH: https://www.sshaudit.com/hardening_guides.html
Anonymous
ali masoomi And the desktop-installer I mentioned above will optionally get you started with a firewall configuration too.

hello all, i wanted to know if it is possible to install the brave browser on fbsd...
G
is that possible? is it available ?
Krond
That's a complex question.
Krond
https://community.brave.com/t/building-on-freebsd/113186/6
Krond
They are not against it, but their upstream is chromium, which is quite hostile to BSDs. Generally this is not an easy task to perform even once, and even harder to maintain.
Hardcode
funny thing, there's no ipsec support in 13th GENERIC. again.
Hardcode
missing the option IPSEC, however IPSEC_SUPPORT is in place.

Who can help me? How to fix this
kub-kun
welll..........
kub-kun
you're screwed
kub-kun
so every snapshot is dead
kub-kun
and it cant read a zpool
Krond
Looks like missing disks. Try booting from USB image and checking disk state/importing zpool.
Hardcode
na
Hardcode
could be nothing
Hardcode
1) old messed loader
Hardcode
2) too big bootable slice and zfs bootblocks are gone above 2nd TB
Hardcode
3) so-called "shadow pool" - remnants of the old zpool that are read by zfs-enabled loader and that it cannot understand (since it's probably UNAVAIL)
Hardcode
fnd only the 4rd) , with 3% probability - the pool is really dead
Hardcode
boot from rescue/live FreeBSD CD and check the pool - I'm sure it will be okay
Hardcode
this thing is happening all the time
Hardcode
thats why to minimize it's probability it's worth to create slices for the rpool being small and around the start of the disk
Hardcode
so in case of the shadow pool you'll need to clean it (potentially destructive operation, if you're not experienced enough) and in case of the boot blocks gone over the 2nd TB you'll need to create the separate boot pool
Hardcode
(or boot from the usb, haha)
Krond
Happened to me once, had to load zpool.cache from loader to proceed. After tracing found out that not all previous zpool uberblocks were overwritten at the start of swap partition.
Hardcode
happened to me like 5 or 6 times for the last 10 years
Hardcode
for different reasons mentioned
Hardcode
the thing is that gptzfsboot or it's UEFI derivative is small and just isn't fullfledged
Hardcode
so it really cannot handle complicated situations
Hardcode
thus it acts like "I give up, the pool is dead" in every situation it doesn't understand
Hardcode
just don't act yourself like it's really dead 'cause you can really make it this way :)
Hardcode
so every snapshot is dead
snapshots are for file recovery, not for pool recovery, dear
kub-kun
Ur right

Hi, can someone help me with the exports config of my nfs server? I tried to limit a share to a specific ip but I can still mount that Folder on any other machine on the network. I tried to do it like this: I want to limit the access to the directory /nas/Torrents to the ip address 192.168.2.247 Somehow that does not work like that. What am I doing wrong?
Krond

Hello! I installed FreeBSD time ago for curiosity and now im again with Gentoo, my main distro. I have a SSD and use some configs to build in RAM like tmpfs or now ZRAM. I saw some threads in forums talking about poudriere or someting like that. Someone can guide me for the correct place? Can I build all in a basic installation? Im trying find answers to make a installation like Gentoo using RAM for build and optimizations to get a final package! Thanks!
Krond
I'm not fluent with poudriere, but I guess you can do the same with synth.
Krond
It's really easy on first run and works pretty nice.
